Stroke Neurologist Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, Receives American Stroke Association’s David G. Sherman Lecture Award

Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, the Stewart J. Greenebaum Endowed Professor of Stroke Neurology at UMSOM and Director of the University of Maryland Medical System’s (UMMS) Stroke Program was honored with the American Stroke Association’s David G. Sherman Lecture Award at the association’s annual International Stroke Conference on February 6.

Dr. Chaturvedi receiving the awardDr. Chaturvedi was among 11 top scientists and medical researchers who received awards recognizing their individual exceptional professional achievements and contributions to stroke care and brain health during the conference.

The award celebrates Dr. Chaturvedi for his lifetime contributions to the investigation, management, mentorship and community service in the stroke field. It is named in honor of the late David G. Sherman, a prominent stroke physician and an internationally recognized leader and researcher in stroke prevention and treatment.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award and for the immense support of the American Stroke Association in advancing stroke prevention education and treatment,” said Dr. Chaturvedi. “Together, we continue to move the needle in delivering recommendations and resources that truly make a difference in patients and their families nationally.”

Dr. Chaturvedi is an internationally recognized neurologist focusing on stroke prevention, treatment and maintenance of brain health. His research interests include carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis, gender differences in stroke, and stroke in young adults.

Peter B. Crino, MD, PhDDuring his tenure at UMSOM, he has led multiple clinical trials that have advanced the field of stroke prevention and helped shape secondary stroke prevention guidelines in collaboration with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Under his leadership, the Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) has also been consistently recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) as among the best in the nation for patient care. The center received the Gold Plus Recognition for 85 percent or higher rates of compliance with AHA’s rigorous, research-based stroke care guidelines. It also received the Target Stroke Honor Role Elite recognition for rapid treatment of ischemic stroke patients and for achieving 90 percent or higher compliance with guidelines for treating diabetic stroke.

“Dr. Chaturvedi is an outstanding leader and physician-scientist who is deeply committed to helping patients achieve the best outcomes possible through every stage of stroke care,” said Peter Crino, MD, PhD, Chair and Professor of Neurology at UMSOM. “He is a pillar in our Comprehensive Stroke Center and this honor is a reflection of his tremendous passion for the field and the research needed to drive positive outcomes.”

During the conference, Dr. Chaturvedi presented his lecture, “The Eternal Quest for Optimal Stroke Prevention,which discussed advances in intensive medical therapy for stroke prevention and proposed methods to improve the quality of care for patients with atrial fibrillation.

Among other honors, Dr. Chaturvedi has received the Association of Indian Neurologists in America (AINA) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, one of the prestigious American Academy of Neurology  Awards recognizing excellence in research and neurology education.

    The Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) has been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) as among the best in the nation for patient care, University of Maryland Medicine (comprised of UMMC and the University of Maryland School of Medicine) announced today. The Center has received multiple accolades from AHA, including Gold Plus Recognition for 85% or higher rates of compliance with AHA’s rigorous, research-based stroke care guidelines; Target Stroke Honor Role Elite for rapid treatment of ischemic stroke patients; and 90 percent or higher compliance with guidelines for treating diabetic strokes. The center’s lifesaving care is provided by faculty from the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology and its Divisions of Neuroradiology and Neurosurgery.
