Transplant Anesthesiology

Transplant Anesthesiology Division

The University of Maryland carries out various types of solid organ transplantation. The anesthesiology department has a highly selective, outstanding team of anesthesiologists to manage these critically ill patients and provide safe anesthetic care. Our center performs approximately 150 kidney, 100 liver, 10 simultaneous pancreas/kidney, 20 heart, and 30 lung transplants in a year. The team for each transplantation is meticulously selected and curated to the needs and complexity of these cases.

Our abdominal transplant anesthesiology team is a hand-picked, close-knit group of fellowship-trained, board-certified anesthesiologists who bring a high level of expertise and diversity to the care of complex transplant patients. We specialize in the placement of invasive monitoring and vascular access, including central venous catheters, arterial lines, pulmonary arterial catheters, and rapid infusion devices, as well as ultrasound application precisely aligned with the clinical demands of each case. Our team is considered experts in managing massive transfusion, vasoplegia, hemodynamic instability, significant fluid shifts, acid-base disturbances, and perioperative arrhythmias. This team is known for delivering consistent, high-quality clinical care and maintaining closed-loop communication with the surgical team to ensure a collegial working environment and optimal patient outcomes.

Our heart and lung transplant anesthesiology team comprises 12 cardiothoracic fellowship-trained, board-certified anesthesiologists. All members are board-certified in anesthesiology and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, with several also holding certification in adult cardiac anesthesiology. Our team brings a deep level of expertise and dedication to the care of heart and lung transplant recipients.
