Dr. Yu holds the Carl M. Mansfield, MD, Endowed Professorship in Radiation Oncology in the Department of Radiation Oncology. A scientist/entrepreneur, Dr. Yu has contributed to international recognition of the department’s pioneering developments in radiation treatment technology. He holds more than 20 patents on radiation and related technologies. In 2006 he patented a dedicated breast radiation therapy method, now called the GammaPod system, which was developed with the help of $3.5 million in Small Business Innovation Research grants from the National Institutes of Health. With support from the university’s technical development experts, Dr. Yu founded Xcision Medical Systems, LLC, to pursue production and regulatory approval of this high-precision, noninvasive system for treating breast cancer. He was named the 2010 University of Maryland Baltimore Entrepreneur of the Year. He also serves as a faculty member in the Bioengineering Graduate Program in the School of Engineering at the University of Maryland College Park.
