Biosketch

Anuj Gupta, MD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. An interventional cardiologist, he serves as clinical co-director (in conjunction with Charles Hong, MD, PHD) of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His primary focus is on the treatment of severe aortic stenosis in patients who are eligible for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In his role evaluating TAVR and related therapies, he is the site principal investigator for the PARTNER 2 trial, Early TAVR Trial, Galileo Trial, and the Medtronic low-risk, randomized trial for TAVR. In addition, he is involved in renal denervation studies, including the SYMPLICITY-HTN3 trial and Reduce HTN: Reinforce trial.

He is a past Governor of the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, the professional society for cardiologists and related cardioavascular specialists. He is a principal in the Maryland Academic Consortium for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Appropriateness and Quality (MACPAQ), a joint initiative between Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine to create a system of external peer review for PCI in the state of Maryland. External peer review, a state requirement for providing PCI services, demonstrates that hospitals in Maryland are providing appropriate, high-quality PCI services.

Research Interests

Multicenter clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of transcatheter aortic valve replacement systems for the treatment of severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis in patients at various risk for surgical aortic valve replacement forms the bulwark of my research efforts.

In addition, efforts to reduce renal toxicity by contrast preservation methods in patients being evaluated for TAVR has formed a secondary interest.  These patients, often elderly with renal dysfunction, benefit from efforts to reduce contrast exposure.

As external peer review establishes itself in the state of Maryland, future efforts will evaluate Appropriate Use Criteria in the context of interventional cardiology reviewed PCI procedures.

Clinical Specialty Details

My main clinical specialties include treatment of coronary disease for acute coronary syndrome, cardiogenic shock, and cardiac arrest, as well as patients declined by cardiac surgery due to patient's high surgical risk.  In addition, I have established, since its inception and along with my surgical colleagues, the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement program at the University of Maryland.
