Dr. Suntha joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as an assistant professor in 1995, after completing residency training in Radiation Oncology at University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Suntha received his BA from Brown University in 1986 and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1990. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania. In May, 2009, he earned an MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to his appointment as President and CEO of the University of Maryland’s St. Joseph Medical Center In December, 2012, Dr. Suntha held numerous administrative roles within the Medical System and School of Medicine. He served as vice chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Maryland School of Medicine and the associate director of clinical affairs at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center where he is the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Professor of Radiation Oncology. In 2009 he was appointed as the vice president for system program development for the University of Maryland Medical System. Then in May 2016, after a nationwide search, Dr. Suntha was appointed President and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center which includes the Shock Trauma Center, Children’s Hospital and the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as the Midtown Campus.

Dr. Suntha's research focuses on patients diagnosed with carcinomas of the head & neck and esopagus. He has conducted numerous investigator-initiated combined modality clincal trials aimed at improving the therapeutic outcome in these diseases. These trials have attempted to define optimal ways of delivering chemotherapy and radiation concurrently, either as definitive therapy or in the neoadjuvant setting, prior to surgical resection.
