Dr. Nitin Seam is a pulmonary and critical care physician whose work bridges the intensive care unit and the science of how clinicians are trained. He serves as the Assistant Dean for Innovation and Educational Technologies, Vice Chair for Education in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he is also Co-Director of the BS-MD program.

Dr. Seam's clinical expertise centers on the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, sepsis, and mechanical ventilation. His educational research explores how technology can personalize and scale medical education, with particular focus on artificial intelligence, simulation-based education, and digital learning grounded in the principles of deliberate practice. He has helped build regional and national training programs in mechanical ventilation.

Dr. Seam served as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of ATS Scholar and previously as Digital Media Editor and Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. During the pandemic, he was a member of the NIH COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel, work recognized with an NIH Director's Award. A Fellow of both the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Physicians, he has been honored repeatedly for teaching and mentoring, including multiple "Attending of the Year" awards and a regional Teacher of the Year Award from the American College of Physicians.

He chairs the multi-center Critical Care Education Research Consortium and serves on the American Thoracic Society Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and the Millennium Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, contributing to national conversations and policy on the responsible use of AI in medical education and scholarship.

As a mentor, Dr. Seam has guided numerous fellows and early-career faculty who are currently on faculty at academic medical centers nationwide. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and delivered invited lectures at national and international meetings across his areas of expertise.
