Biosketch
Matthew Brown, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He treats patients at the Kaufman Cancer Center at UM Upper Chesapeake Health, the Maryland Proton Treatment Center, and the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Brown cares for a broad spectrum of patients and disease sites, with a special focus on pediatric cancers, central nervous system (CNS) malignancies, including brain tumors and spine metastases, as well as gynecologic malignancies.
He is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland, where he served as chief resident. During his residency, Dr. Brown also completed specialized training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Heidelberg Ion Therapy Center as an American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) grant recipient, focusing on the treatment of pediatric cancers and the clinical applications of ion therapy.
Dr. Brown’s research focuses on the clinical applications of advanced radiation technologies and novel approaches to cancer treatment. He is a dual recipient of the department’s Seed Grant Award in 2024 and 2025. He also attended the intensive ASCO/AACR Workshop on Methods in Clinical Cancer Research, known as the “Vail” Workshop, where he developed a Phase II, randomized, open-label, single-center study comparing intensity-modulated proton therapy with volume-modulated arc therapy in patients receiving pelvic nodal irradiation for newly diagnosed gynecologic primary cancers. This investigator-initiated clinical trial is currently open across the University of Maryland.
Dr. Brown has presented his research at several national scientific meetings, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the Particle Therapy Cooperative Group–North America (PTCOG-NA). His ongoing research includes evaluating the clinical applications of machine learning in radiation oncology, as well as investigating genomic patterns in head and neck cancers. Through this work, he seeks to identify opportunities to integrate advanced technologies and personalized approaches into the care of patients with cancer.
In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Brown has a strong interest in medical education. He has served on the American College of Radiation Oncology’s Education Committee and as Education Chair of the Resident Committee, having previously served as Resident Chair of Communications. He has also served on the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology’s Clinical Operations Committee, Interdepartmental Radiation Oncology Network Committee, and multiple clinical practice guideline committees. Dr. Brown has been actively involved in teaching medical students and previously founded and led the Radiation Oncology Interest Group at the University of Alabama School of Medicine
