Obesity Medicine

After finishing his clinical training, Dr. Patel pursued further research training at Weill Cornell School of Medicine in New York, NY where he obtained a masters of science in clinical epidemiology.  There he pursed his interests in underserved populations by studying the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Bangladeshi immigrants.  After completing his research fellowship, he remained in New York as a hospitalist at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center (now Mt. Sinai Morningside and Mt. Sinai West Hospitals).  There he served as co-clerkship director at the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt rotation site for Columbia University medical students. 

In 2014, he decided to purse his desire to practice primary care and joined the faculty at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.  In addition to practicing and teaching primary care to medical students and residents, he ran the GW preoperative medicine clinic from 2015-2020.  He also taught motivational interviewing and trained standardized patients to provide feedback on motivational interviewing skills to students in their primary care clerkship.   In 2017, he joined GW’s weight management team where he treated and managed patients dealing with obesity.  Additionally, he became board certified in obesity medicine in 2019. 

Dr. Patel joined the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2020 where he is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine.  He provides primary care to patients at the Faculty Practice Office on 419 West Redwood Street and inpatient care to patients at the University of Maryland Medical Center.  He also has a weight management practice in the Division of General Internal Medicine where he provides personalized weight management care to individuals seeking to improve their overall health through weight loss.
