Biosketch
Dr. Amal Mattu completed an emergency medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, after which he completed a teaching fellowship with a special focus on emergency cardiology. He joined the faculty in emergency medicine at the University of Maryland in 1996. He has received more than twenty teaching commendations including national awards from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA), and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).
Dr. Mattu's areas of academic focus are emergency cardiology, geriatric emergency medicine, faculty development, and risk management. He has authored the bestselling texts ECGs for Acute, Critical, and Emergency Care, Volume 1 and Volume 2. He has served as an editor for more than 30 other texts in emergency medicine (including 12 focused on emergency cardiology). Dr. Mattu is the first emergency physician to serve as primary Guest Editor on issues of Cardiology Clinics (three times) and Clinics in Geriatric Medicine, and he serves as the consulting editor for Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America. His online program www.ECGWeekly.com trains more than 25,000 clinicians around the world in advanced ECG skills. Dr. Mattu is a frequent speaker at national and international CME conferences in emergency medicine, having provided > 4000 hours of conference CME in more than 30 countries spanning 6 continents.
Dr. Mattu is currently a Distinguished Professor of the University of Maryland-Baltimore; a tenured Professor and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development; he serves as the Director of the Faculty Development Fellowship and the Risk Management Fellowships; and he is founder and Co-Director of the Emergency Cardiology Fellowship in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland.
