Dr. Desai is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. She has a broad range of interests within the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, including periviable birth, perinatal ethics, complex contraception and access to abortion services, physician wellness, maternal morbidity and mortality, and maternal diabetes.

She is active in the institution and on a state level as a member of committees focused on the impact of maternal health comorbidities. She has several ongoing research projects in these areas. She is currently on the University of Maryland Medical System Obstetric Peer Review Committee, a hospital-based committee that reviews adverse obstetric outcomes and makes institution and system-based recommendations to improve maternal, fetal, and neonatal care. She is a member of the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Ethics Committee and of the smaller Perinatal Ethics subgroup (Prenatal Consultation Team). She is also the director of the  UMMC Diabetes in Pregnancy Care Coordination Program, a team dedicated to caring for patients across three outpatient office sites with gestational, Type 1, and Type 2 diabetes while pregnant and postpartum.

She is a former chair of the statewide Connecticut Maternal Mortality Review Committee. During her time as chair, she was instrumental in coordinating local organizations to work with the state legislature to pass a bill to ensure that this MMR committee was codified into law, made a priority, and had the appropriate protections in place. Currently, she is an active member of the Maryland State Maternal Mortality Review Committee.

Finally, she is an active leader in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). As the District IV Young Physician Council Chair, she leads a group of board-certified OBGYNs who are within their first 8 years of board certification. This council represents the interests of OBGYNs (located in the southeast United States, Puerto Rico, West Indies, and Argentina) who are early in their careers.
