Biosketch
Dr. Amr is an academic physician/scientist with broad and diverse experience as a basic science and population researcher, educator, and clinical care provider.
Dr. Amr received her medical degree and a master's degree in Biochemistry from Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France. Following an internship in Medical Oncology and two years of assistantship in Nuclear Medicine, she joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. During this period, Dr. Amr focused on basic and clinical research, contributing to biochemical endocrinology, particularly Glycoprotein Hormone Structure-Activity Relationships. After her tenure at NIH and later at Georgetown University, Dr. Amr served as a physician and then Medical Director of an urgent care and occupational medicine clinic for several years before returning to academia in 1996.
After completing her MS in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and training in Public Health and occupational Medicine, Dr. Amr joined the faculty at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) in 1999. In addition to conducting research, Dr. Amr directed the Preventive Medicine Residency program and the Division of Preventive Medicine, taught and mentored graduate students and junior faculty. Dr. Amr has made substantial contributions to the understanding of environmental and occupational factors that affect human health (cancer and other diseases), and how to translate this knowledge into prevention.
Dr. Amr is currently Professor Emerita of EPH, and a member of the Population Science Program in Oncology within Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer, at University of Maryland, Baltimore. As such, Dr. Amr is active within EPH and UMSOM.
