In Memoriam: Dr. George L. Drusano

George Louis Drusano passed away on June 10, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, following a long-term illness. He was 75 years old. 

Born in Baltimore on August 22, 1949, to Louis and Marcella Drusano, Dr. Drusano graduated from Loyola High School in 1967. After graduating from Boston College in 1971, he entered the University of Maryland School of Medicine and earned his MD in 1975. After completing his residency in internal medicine, Dr. Drusano remained at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as an attending physician, researcher, and later a full professor, studying infectious diseases and treating HIV-AIDS patients in the early days of the epidemic. 

In 1992, Dr. Drusano moved to Albany Medical Center Hospital in New York, where he served as the Director of Clinical Pharmacology until 2011, when he became the Director of the University of Florida’s Institute for Therapeutic Innovation. 

Dr. Drusano’s research led to multiple awards and recognitions, including the 2012 Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Drusano is survived by his wife, Marianne, and sons George, Michael, and Stephen, and extended family. The family will receive visitors from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, June 22, at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street, Whitman Massachusetts. More details are available here
