Dr. Bennie Jeng Announces He Will Assume Chair of Department of Ophthalmology at Penn

Bennie H. Jeng, MD, Chair of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, announced today that he has accepted a position at the University of Pennsylvania and will be stepping down as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the UM School of Medicine, effective June 30, 2022.

Dr. Jeng, who joined UMSOM in 2013, is a leader in the study of cornea and external diseases, and a distinguished National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded physician-scientist. His primary interests are in the areas of corneal transplantation, ocular surface disease, ocular microbiology, eye banking, and artificial corneas. He is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his MD Degree in 1998.

During his tenure at UMSOM, the Department of Ophthalmology made significant advances in clinical care, education, and research. The Department’s clinical footprint has expanded, its education focus is very strong with many students going into Ophthalmology, and the research portfolio has improved.

Dr. Jeng previously served on the faculty of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the Cleveland Clinic.

Bowers Distinguished Professor and Dean, University of Maryland School of Medicine. “We have seen marked advances in the Department during this period, and the Department’s key areas are in a strong position. O’Malley, Jr., MD, FACS, President and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical Center and Professor of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at UMSOM, added “Dr. Jeng has been a great partner with the University of Maryland Medical Center during his tenure. He and his faculty have significantly advanced the clinical and academic mission within multiple keys areas within the field of Ophthalmology, and have brought higher quality care to our community and citizens across the state.”
