About our Combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency

Our EM/IM and EM/IM/CC programs are some of the most competitive combined residencies in the Nation. Residents in both of these programs begin under the EM/IM track. They may later choose to extend and complete an additional pathway in Critical Care.

In addition to their academic successes, EM/IM and EM/IM/CC residents routinely assume leadership roles on individual rotations, within both parent programs and the medical center. EM/IM residents have a well-known reputation as some of the strongest residents and leaders in our medical center.

Our EM/IM curriculum provides a structured and dynamic blend of both disciplines. Over the course of residency an equivalent amount of training is spent under the supervision of both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. We intentionally ensure all residents have experience with seasonal variation in illness, a necessary aspect of both specialties.

Our graduates go on to practice Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, subspecialties within these areas, and combinations of these specialties.  We have had graduates go into academics, community settings, single-specialty practice, split-time practices, and even fellowship and further subspecialization.   Our alumni are frequently in leadership roles and highly sought after due to the profound and broad impact they can have on their institutions.
