Serving our community is what drove so many of us to medicine—and it’s what keeps us in academic emergency medicine in Baltimore, providing lifesaving care to our neighbors in need.
As physicians, we remain collectively committed to understanding social determinants of health and providing high quality, evidence-based care to our patients. Beyond our work as clinicians, educators, researchers, and administrators, our Department comes together several times a year to volunteer our time and skills in service to the Baltimore community.
UMEM Day of Service
Once a year our faculty join forces to volunteer our time or collect resources for local organizations in need. In the past we have organized hygiene kits for Paul’s Place, volunteered for the SEED School’s Juneteenth 5K, and participated community cleanup events with Project Plase. UMB CURE Scholars
Numerous faculty and residents participate in teaching and mentoring Baltimore middle and high school students through the UMB Cure Scholars program—a university-wide initiative that offers local students exposure to the fields of science, technology, math, and medicine.
