The Department is pleased to announce that on July 1, 2026, the School of Medicine promoted Mark Sutherland, MD, to the rank of Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine as a clinical educator.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in psychology with a certificate in neuroscience from Duke University, Dr. Sutherland earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Sutherland entered into our department’s combined emergency medicine/internal medicine/critical care residency, serving as chief resident his final year. In the decade we have known Dr. Sutherland, he has been deeply committed to patient care, education, and data analytics. Alongside his clinical duties at both the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department at UMMC’s Downtown Campus, he has also served as a Physician Informaticist with UMMC’s Center for Technology Innovation.

Dr. Sutherland’s interdisciplinary leadership and vast information technology expertise have helped our Department effectively respond to numerous unexpected challenges. In 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sutherland stepped into the role as Medical Director for the UMMS Access Center. To further solidify his skills in data informatics, Dr. Sutherland founded and completed UMSOM’s Practice Pathway for Clinical Informatics from 2020 to 2023. Earlier this year, he accepted the role Director of our Center for Emergency Medicine Data Analytics and Reporting.

A quadruple board-certified physician in emergency medicine, internal medicine, critical care, and clinical informatics, Dr. Sutherland is a conscientious, compassionate clinician with a masterful ability to deliver high-quality medical care. Dr. Sutherland is a physician leader, innovative data analytics expert, and dedicated educator and mentor. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Sutherland on his well-earned promotion.
