Ryan Spangler Promoted to Associate Professor

The Department is pleased to announce that on July 1, 2026, the School of Medicine promoted Ryan Spangler, MD, to the rank of Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine as a clinical educator.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in biologic sciences from the University of Maryland, Dr. Spangler earned his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine. In 2011, Dr. Spangler began his residency with our department, serving as Chief Resident his final year. He has remained a valued faculty member in our department ever since.

Dr. Spangler’s strong commitment to education and career development is evident in his own professional path. In 2017, when Dr. Spangler was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor, we also appointed him to serve as Assistant Director of Undergraduate Medical Education. Since 2021, Dr. Spangler has served as our Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, where he shines as a dynamic educator, devoted mentor, and seasoned medical leader.

Whether helping patients at the bedside, teaching students in the classroom, or advising mentees in the office, Dr. Spangler brings energy and commitment to everything he does. As our Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, Dr. Spangler has significantly and meaningfully elevated the role of Emergency Medicine within the School. In 2020, when UMSOM undertook its “Renaissance Curriculum” effort to revise the medical student experience, Dr. Spangler played an instrumental role in adding Emergency Medicine as a required clerkship for all medical students. Now every medical student at UMSOM receives first-hand experience in Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Spangler is an exemplary clinician who has made incredible strides in improving learning experiences for UMSOM’s students and residents. Dr. Spangler’s leadership, enthusiasm, and vision are tremendous assets to our Department. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Spangler on his well-earned promotion.
