Enteric Diseases

Almost half a million children under the age of five die from enteric diseases each year, primarily in resource-limited settings. In collaboration with researchers around the world, CVD remains committed to finding new therapies and vaccines to mitigate the burden of enteric diseases and the toll they take on the young children. In addition to developing vaccines, the Center has a long history of performing controlled human infections with various enteric pathogens, including cholera and Shigella. These challenge studies provide a critical foundation for vaccine development and increase our understanding of immune responses to infection. CVD continues to use challenge studies to understand disease pathology, to determine correlates of protection, and to evaluate vaccine and therapeutic efficacy.

Disease Areas: Campylobacter, Clostridiodes difficile, Cryptosporidium, E. coli (indluding enterotoxigenic E. coli [ETEC] and enteroaggregative E. Coli [EAEC]), Enterobacter cloacae, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis viruses, Klebsiella, non-typhoidal Salmonella, norovirus, polio virus, rotavirus, S. Enteriditis, S. Paratyphi, S. Typhimurium, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (typhoid fever), Shigella, Vibrio cholera
