Program Details

The Ultrasound Fellowship at the University of Maryland Department of Emergency Medicine is designed to cultivate both expert clinicians and skilled educators in point-of-care ultrasound. Fellows play an integral role in teaching across multiple learner levels, including emergency medicine residents, medical students, and practicing clinicians. Regular opportunities include leading ultrasound rounds, facilitating hands-on lab sessions, contributing to structured curricula, and participating in continuing medical education (CME) courses. Fellows are also actively involved in hospital and system-level POCUS committees, gaining valuable administrative and leadership experience. Support is provided for national conference participation and continued professional development.

The clinical and academic environment at the University of Maryland Medical Center provides rich exposure to diverse pathology and advanced ultrasound applications, including pediatric ultrasound, TEE during cardiac arrest and transvaginal imaging. Fellows benefit from access to a wide array of institutional resources, including a simulation center with Intelligent Ultrasound BodyWorks and HeartWorks simulators, quarterly cadaver labs, and robust research infrastructure including technical writing support and grant support through the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Each fellow completes a scholarly project with IRB submission and may collaborate on ongoing departmental research. Fellows will receive a full-time faculty appointment in the University of Maryland School of Medicine and divide their time between scholarly activities and direct patient care, working approximately eight clinical shifts per month at affiliated academic sites, ensuring ongoing clinical growth while expanding ultrasound expertise across varied patient populations.
