Common causes of stroke in young patients: --> Arterial dissection (most commonly involving the carotids, often trauma related) --> Cardioembolic events (most commonly via a patent foramen ovale (PFO) associated with an atrial septal aneurysm; also atrial septal anuerysms and myxomatous mitral valve prolapse; most common amongst our patient population is likely endocarditis) --> Large vessel disease (typically in 5th decade of life) --> Small vessel disease (typically in 5th decade of life) --> Coagulopathies (i.e. Sickle cell anemia) --> Vasculopathies/Vasculitis Cerrato, et al.
