The Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to announce that Dr. Jon Mark Hirshon has been selected as the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar to Egypt for the 2026-27 academic year, one of the highest honors in international education.
This remarkable distinction is especially noteworthy because only one Fulbright Distinguished Scholar is selected for Egypt each year, and only a select number of Fulbright Distinguished Scholars and Distinguished Chairs are appointed worldwide annually. Dr. Hirshon’s selection reflects a career defined by excellence, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to advancing emergency medicine, public health, and global health.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Hirshon has made extraordinary contributions to our department, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the broader academic and healthcare communities. His influence extends far beyond his impressive body of scholarship. As a mentor, colleague, and friend, he has helped shape the careers of countless faculty members, residents, fellows, and students.
Although Dr. Hirshon recently retired, his impact on our missions of research, education, patient care, and service continues to be felt across our institution and around the world. His dedication to improving health outcomes and fostering international collaboration has left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
As a department committed to being globally recognized for excellence in education, exemplary patient care, groundbreaking research, and the development of future leaders in emergency medicine, we take great pride in seeing one of our own receive this distinguished international honor.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jon Mark Hirshon on this well-deserved recognition and in wishing him continued success as he prepares for his Fulbright experience in Egypt in 2027.
