Brian Browne Conferred Status as Department’s First Professor Emeritus

The Department is pleased to announce that on July 1, 2026, the University of Maryland, Baltimore officially appointed our longtime chair, Brian Browne, MD, with the status of Professor Emeritus. With four decades of service to our Department, Dr. Browne developed an inspiring career as a gifted physician, visionary leader, and tenacious entrepreneur devoted to building the Department of Emergency Medicine—and ensuring its success.

The impacts of Dr. Browne’s career are profound. From his constant support of our educational initiatives to his focus on quality and patient safety and his service on innumerable committees, steering groups, and task forces, Dr. Browne paved the way for our Department’s success. Under Dr. Browne’s leadership we remained financially solvent and weathered significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to his leadership overseeing our faculty practice, Dr. Browne was deeply committed to faculty development. Within UMSOM, he advocated for policies that promote and advance clinical faculty who, due to their clinical commitments, faced challenges to promotion relative to their PhD colleagues. Through his work on UMSOM’s Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Clinical Advisory Committee, Dr. Browne played a critical role in UMSOM’s decision to adjust promotion requirements for clinical faculty—including many of us in Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Browne dedicated himself wholeheartedly in service to professional organizations and the broader emergency medicine community. Earlier this year, the American Association of Emergency Medicine recognized Dr. Browne with its esteemed David K. Wagner Award for his lasting, meaningful impact on the specialty of Emergency Medicine.

Formally conferring Dr. Browne with the title of Professor Emeritus solidifies his enduring vision and steady leadership, which will forever serve as foundations of our Department. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Browne on this very well-earned honor.
