How to Apply

1. How many positions do you have? 
We have 8 Categorical and 8 Advanced. We currently do not have R positions.

2. When is your application deadline? 
We do not have a deadline. Residency programs can begin reviewing ERAS applications at 9 a.m. ET on September 24th and we will begin reviewing applications immediately.

3. Why does it look like you have different PGY-1/Clinical Base Year numbers each year? 
We always have 8 PGY-1 Anesthesiology Resident slots. Advanced Matched residents can match their PGY-1 year with the University of Maryland Department of Internal Medicine Preliminary Program. When this happens, we consider these interns just as we would our Categorical interns and they receive the same training. 4. Do you provide preliminary spots for applicants who are applying for advanced positions? 
No, we do not provide preliminary spots. Our advanced-track applicants are not automatically considered for a position in University of Maryland’s Internal Medicine or General Surgery Preliminary Programs. Our program is separate. Therefore, if you interviewed with University of Maryland’s Internal Medicine Prelim Program or General Surgery Prelim Program, you would rank them separately from us; and if you did not interview with them, you cannot rank them.

5. Do you have any requirements for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores? 
Our program does require USMLE Step 1. There is not a maximum number of attempts. We require a USMLE Step 2 score > 230 (or COMLEX equivalent).

6. I am a D.O. applicant. Am I required to provide USMLE scores? 
No. In accordance with SAAAPM, D.O. applicants are not required to take the USMLE. We accept the COMLEX Exams for D.O. applicants.

7. I will be visiting Baltimore in the next couple of weeks. Would it be possible to meet with a resident or faculty member and see the Medical Center? 
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate requests for in-person visits. We are complying with the recommendations for virtual interviews, and we will not be doing in-person visits out of fairness to all applicants. But we hope you enjoy your time in Baltimore and get to explore! 

Second Look Day – February 2027 (DATE TBD)

We are excited to host an in-person Second Look Day in February 2027. Applicants who interview with our program during the 2026–2027 recruitment season and have not previously completed a rotation with our department will receive an invitation to attend.

This event provides an opportunity to connect with our residents and coordinators, tour our facilities, and experience our program and culture firsthand!

8. Does your program offer any faculty-led mission trips or international rotations that count toward elective credits? 
We do not offer any faculty-led mission trips at this time. We encourage residents to apply for international rotations to complete during their elective time in the CA3 year (for example, SEA-HVO traveling fellowship, ASA Resident International Anesthesia Scholarship Program), and we support our residents who receive these awards to complete these rotation opportunities.

9. I completed an away rotation with the University of Maryland Department of Anesthesiology. Do I still need to signal your program when completing my ERAS application? 
Yes. If you completed an away rotation with our program and plan to apply, you must still submit a signal to our program in ERAS. Please note that completion of a rotation does not guarantee an interview.

• Three (3) Letters of Recommendation AND USMLE Step 2 Scores before we review your application.
• Applicants must have a Step 2 score of >230 to be considered for an interview (or equivalent COMLEX)
• D.O. applicants are not required to submit USMLE scores. We will accept COMLEX scores.
• We are participating in Program Signaling.
  Note for Away Rotators: If you completed an away rotation with our program and plan to apply, you must still submit a signal to our program. Completion of a rotation does not guarantee an interview.
• Signal Statement: As part of your ERAS application, please include a 100-word explanation of why you are interested in completing your anesthesiology residency training at the University of Maryland. Submit as a "signal statement" in ERAS.
• International Applicants - Non-immigrant alien residents will be sponsored under the J-1 visas program. H1B, F1, B1, O, and TN visas are not considered appropriate visas for residents. Our residency program abides by the rules of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) for final selection of trainees.

ERAS APPLICATION

IMPORTANT INFORMATION for Applicants Considering Ranking our Program 4-year Categorical and/or 3-year Advanced:

All Matched Residents are required to attend mandatory orientation prior to the start of their training year.

PGY-2/CA-1 Orientation is routinely scheduled to start on 7/1.

Intern Year/PGY-1 Orientation is routinely scheduled to start in early June.

INTERVIEW INFORMATION

• Virtual Interviews are conducted during the months of October through early January. Interview invitations will be sent beginning the first week of October and will continue on a rolling basis through the end of October. Conducting virtual interviews is recommended under the guidance of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
• Interview Season interview days are typically Tuesdays and Thursdays and on occasion, Wednesdays (subject to change).
• Candidates invited to interview will receive an email notification from the program through Thalamus scheduling software, with the ability to self-schedule their interview date and session.
• Candidates invited to interview should anticipate scheduling in Thalamus during one of the following two timeframes:
  
  Session 1: 9:50 AM – 12:30 PM 
  Session 2: 11:40 AM – 2:15 PM
• Interviews are conducted by our residency program directors, anesthesiology clinical teaching faculty and current residents. 
• During the interview day, candidates attend an informal virtual lunch mixer with current residents and other candidates and have an opportunity to ask questions about the program.
• To maintain our commitment to equity, we are unable to provide in-person visits to the department or hospital tours.
