Rwanda Global Health Elective
October 08, 2026

Dr. Richard Hubbard and Dr. Christine Niyibogora in collaboration have successfully launched the department’s new Global Anesthesiology Elective.
Associate Professor, Richard Hubbard, MD is the Director of the Global Anesthesiology Program and Section Chief for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology. Adjunct Instructor, Christine Niyibogora, MD is the Course Associate Director of the Perioperative Global Health Anesthesiology Research Elective in Rwanda.
Senior medical students Kelly Zhou and Juliana Sherchan arrived in Kigali on September 27 and have been rotating in the operating rooms at the department's partner institution, King Faisal Hospital. During their elective, they have gained exposure to anesthesiology and perioperative medicine while participating in the care of patients with complex surgical and cardiac conditions. The experience has also provided valuable insight into healthcare delivery in a resource-variable setting, broadening their clinical knowledge and global perspective.
Reflecting on the experience, Kelly Zhou described the elective as "such a privilege," noting the opportunity to learn from both Rwandan and international physicians and to witness firsthand how collaboration and mentorship are helping expand specialized cardiac care in Rwanda. She was particularly inspired by the dedication and compassion of the cardiac team and the opportunity to work alongside leaders in the field, including the country's first cardiothoracic surgeon and pioneering pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists.
Juliana Sherchan highlighted the welcoming environment at King Faisal Hospital and the chance to work closely with pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists and cardiologists. She noted that caring for children with advanced cardiac conditions provided valuable insight into the challenges of healthcare delivery in the region and praised the local team's clinical expertise, resourcefulness, resilience, and commitment to teaching.
Both students emphasized that the experience deepened their understanding of global health, equitable patient care, and the impact of international collaboration. They also expressed a desire to return in the future to continue learning and building relationships with their colleagues in Rwanda.
We are excited for many more medical students, residents, and fellows to have this opportunity in the future!
