5th Anesthesiology Research Retreat Showcases Scientific Innovation and Collaboration

May 11, 2026

The Department of Anesthesiology hosted its 5th Annual Research Retreat on Monday, May 11, 2026, bringing together more than 70 faculty members, fellows, and students for a day of scientific exchange and collaboration.

The retreat highlighted the department’s latest advances in basic, translational, and clinical research. Presentations covered a broad range of topics, including acute lung injury, vascular biology, traumatic injury, sepsis, intraoperative transfusion, drug-induced unconsciousness and its reversal, the impact of general anesthesia on brain health, and artificial intelligence modeling of continuous high-resolution vital signs for clinical outcome prediction.

The program featured keynote lectures from two distinguished speakers from Mass General Brigham; Harvard Medical School. Dr. Eric Schmidt presented “Using Circulating Glycosaminoglycans to Guide Precision Medicine in Sepsis,” while Dr. Ken Solt delivered a lecture entitled “Activating the Brain’s Arousal Systems to Reverse Drug-Induced Unconsciousness.”

A highlight of the retreat was the moderated poster session, which showcased more than 30 submitted abstracts. Four trainees received the Excellence Awards in recognition of their outstanding research abstracts: Boyang Ren, Yijia Li, Phuoc Nguyen, and Zachary Wilhelm. Each awardee received a certificate and cash prize.

The department extends its appreciation to the Retreat Committee, the Abstract Review and Award Selection Group, and the Research Administration Team for their dedication and hard work in organizing a successful and engaging event.
