Title: Causes of Heel Pain

Category: Orthopedics

Keywords: heel, pain, causes (PubMed Search)

Posted: 1/17/2015 by Michael Bond, MD (Updated: 7/21/2026)

We often think of Plantar Fascitis as the cause of heel pain but there are a lot of other causes. Some of those include:

  • Heel bursitis-  inflammation on the back of the heel. Can be from jumping or poor fitting footwear.
  • Heel bumps - from excessively rubbing resulting in too much bone formation.
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Chance inflammation of the heel pad
  • Stress fractures
  • Severs disease
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis
  • Posterior calcaneal bursitis
