David Mintz, MD, PhD Named Chair, Department of Anesthesiology

Dr. Mintz is a distinguished neuroanesthesiologist and a nationally recognized leader in research, education, and perioperative operations. He currently serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Operations in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medicine and as Executive Director for Perioperative Strategy for the Johns Hopkins Health System.

As an expert in neurosurgical anesthesiology, Dr. Mintz’s clinical work focuses on anesthetic management for intracranial neurosurgery, neurovascular procedures, and complex spine surgeries. He has mentored numerous junior faculty and fellows in neuroanesthesiology, many of whom have advanced to leadership roles in academic anesthesiology nationwide, shaping the future of the specialty.

With over 75 published scholarly works and more than 15 years of continuous NIH funding, Dr. Mintz is an accomplished physician-scientist. His research centers on how early developmental exposure to anesthetics and sedatives affects brain circuit formation—a critical area with implications for pediatric perioperative and intensive care. His contributions to academic anesthesiology include serving as an Associate Editor for Anesthesiology, the official journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and his longstanding involvement with the Association of University Anesthesiologists, where he has chaired the Scientific Advisory Board and now serves on the governing Council.

Dr. Mintz has earned multiple teaching awards for his dedication to clinical and classroom education of residents and fellows. He is deeply committed to developing future physician-scientists and currently leads the Hopkins T32 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program as Principal Investigator and Director.

We extend our gratitude to Matthew Tulis, MD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, for his leadership as Interim Chair since April, and to the Search Committee, chaired by Frank Henn, MD, Chair of Orthopaedics, for their outstanding work in selecting from a highly competitive pool of candidates. We are thrilled with the appointment of Dr. Mintz.
