Residency Training

Letter from the Program Director

Welcome to the University of Maryland Anesthesiology Residency Program!‌

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland is dedicated to training the very best anesthesiologists! We offer a robust program with very structured educational activities and protected lecture time, a curriculum that is constantly updated, excellent leadership, renowned faculty, and the camaraderie of residents.

Our program provides excellent clinical training in a variety of high acuity settings, including experiences at an internationally renowned Level I trauma center (R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center), as well as ambulatory practice settings. William Osler said: “Let the patient be your textbook.” Our complicated patients undergoing complex procedures mean we have the best anesthesiology “textbook” in the country!

Our department is also highly ranked for research; last year we were #10 and this year we are #11 for NIH funding. We have internationally renowned basic and translational scientists and a very active clinical research program. If your career plans include becoming an academic anesthesiologist, we can help you get involved in an ongoing research study or develop a study of your own.

As you can see, our trainees are well-prepared for the next phase of their career, whether they go into a community or an academic practice, and are very successful in securing highly competitive fellowships and jobs.

In addition to University of Maryland’s great clinical training and academic experiences, our main hospital is conveniently located immediately adjacent to Baltimore’s famed Inner Harbor and within steps of apartment buildings that fit any budget and offer many amenities.  The city of Baltimore provides fun and exciting activities for everyone, including professional sports, diverse restaurants, theater, the harbor, hiking, and much more for all to explore! Baltimore is on the water, is close to the ocean and mountains, and cities such as Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York City are within easy driving distance.

All of these factors combine to create an exceptional place to train and make life-long connections in our collegial family. We are committed to innovate in medical education, provide a great educational environment, and further develop what we believe is one of the best anesthesiology residencies in the country!

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions.  We look forward to working with you!
