Secondary - All Ranks (Non-Tenure Track, Volunteer)

Secondary Promotions – All Ranks (Volunteer, non-tenure track)

Secondary promotions are given at the same rank as the rank in the primary appointment promotion, with ‘secondary’ in parenthesis following the rank. The rank is only prefixed with “Adjunct” or “Clinical” if the primary promotion rank is prefixed with “Adjunct” or Clinical”.

Primary appointment is within the School of Medicine

If secondary promotion is requested with the primary promotion:

The Secondary Promotion Request Form should be included in the primary promotion packet (or sent to OAA when requested if not included in the packet)

Primary faculty promotions to the Associate Professor or Professor level, full-time, may take 4 to 6 months to process because the primary promotion must be reviewed by the OAA, SOM APT Committee, Executive Committee, School of Medicine Council, President (if full-time) and Dean. The secondary promotion will be approved at the same time the primary promotion is approved.

If secondary promotion is requested after the primary promotion is approved, a secondary promotion packet must be submitted to OAA using the electronic submissions instructions and include:

  1. Secondary Promotion Request Form
  2. CV (dated no more than 90 days prior to the packet submission)
  3. CV verification (dated on or after the date of the CV)
  4. Demographic form

These secondary promotions will take 1 to 2 months to be processed because they need to be reviewed by the OAA, School of Medicine Council and Dean.

Primary appointment is outside the School of Medicine, but within the University of Maryland System:

  1. Secondary Promotion Request Form
  2. Copy of primary appointment promotion approval letter
  3. CV (dated no more than 90 days prior to the packet submission)
  4. CV verification (dated on or after the date of the CV)
  5. Demographic form

These secondary faculty promotions to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor will need to be reviewed by the OAA, Executive Committee, School of Medicine Council and Dean and therefore may take 2 to 4 months to complete.
