Reminders

UMSOM follows the UMB Policy on Sabbatical and Leave of Absence. Refer to Section II of the USM Policy for more detailed information concerning Sabbatical and Leave of Absence requests.

Send requests for Sabbatical and Leave of Absence, by email, to Hannah Andrews with a copy to Dave Ingle.

Sabbatical Leave

Eligibility for Sabbatical Leave

  • Faculty member must be tenured.
  • Faculty member must have completed at least six (6) years of service before requesting a Sabbatical leave (or six years of service since the last Sabbatical leave).
  • Faculty member must agree to return to the University for at least one year following completion of the Sabbatical leave.

Process for Approval of Sabbatical Leave

  • Submit to the Office of Academic Administration at least 5 months prior to the beginning of sabbatical:
    • A letter from Chair to the Dean requesting the leave on behalf of the faculty member.
    • A signed and dated copy of the Sabbatical Leave Application Faculty Agreement.
  • Our office will forward the request to the Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs for approval.

Leave of Absence

Eligibility for Leave of Absence Without Pay

  • Faculty member must be employed on a continuing or term contract.
  • Faculty member must have been employed for at least 2 semesters or 12 months prior to beginning of leave.
  • Faculty member is usually granted leave for not more than one full year.
  • Faculty member is expected continue employment upon termination of leave.

Process for Approval of Leave of Absence Without Pay

  • Submit to the Office of Academic Administration a letter from Chair to the Dean requesting the leave on behalf of the faculty member.
  • Our office will forward the request to the Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs for approval.
