Eligilbity for this program is limited to undergraduate students at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) who are currently in their second (sophomore) or third (junior) year of school.

Please complete and submit all portions of your application via the Application Portal.

  1. Essay Questions
    Max 1500 characters (approx. 250 words) each
    1. What are your long-term goals (related to education, training, profession, or other broader goals)? How will this summer research experience help you in attaining those goals?

    2. What areas of research are you interested in and why?
    3. Describe a challenge you faced and how you addressed or are addressing it.
    4. (Optional) Census data shows that the U.S. population is becoming increasingly diverse. As a result, there is a growing recognition that diversity in the biomedical research and healthcare workforces is essential to effectively meet the needs of our population. Describe your current understanding of biomedical and workforce diversity and how you envision contributing to it in the future.
  2. Required Documents
    1. Current Transcript (unofficial)
    2. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV). Biosketch CV is preferred.

  3. Letters of Recommendation
    • Two required recommendations, up to two additional optional recommendations.
    • Recommenders should be faculty members or advisors, or past research mentors or supervisors.
    • Choose recommenders who know you well and could speak to your character, strengths, and abilities. 
    • Recommenders who have interacted with you within the past two years are preferred.
    • The two required recommendations should not come from current graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. 
      • You are welcome to request additional recommendations from a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow as optional recommendations.
