To present at MSRD, all of the following requirements must be met:

• Presenters must be current UMSOM medical students who have completed at least one year of medical school.
• The research must have been conducted after enrollment at UMSOM.
• The research must be related to a biomedical field or a health topic.
• Clinical case presentations and vignettes are eligible.
• The research must not have been presented at a previous MSRD. Research that extends work presented at a prior MSRD is permitted. In these cases, previous research and data may be included as background or preliminary data.
• The research must have progressed sufficiently to include results. MSRD is not intended for research proposals or projects without results. Projects without results are not eligible for presentation.
• MD/PhD students are eligible to present if they are in their second year of medical school or in the first or second year of the PhD program.

Multiple Presenters

• Students who want to present together (co-presenters) must register together by completing one combined form.
• It is strongly recommended that no more than 2 students present together. 
• We will consider up to 3 co-presenters on a case-by-case basis.
• Each co-presenter must be an eligible presenter.
• If awarded a prize, all co-presenters will evenly split the monetary award.  

Multiple Presentations

• Multiple presentations are not allowed this year.
• Students may request consideration for one presentation in total, whether serving as the presenter or co-presenter.

All presenters are expected to:

• Arrive at least 10 minutes before their assigned presentation session.
• Present during their assigned oral or poster session.
• Remain for the duration of their assigned presentation session.
• Follow all instructions provided by the Office of Student Research regarding presentation logistics and event participation.

Presenters are strongly encouraged to:

• Attend the MSRD Opening Remarks and Keynote Address.
• Attend additional presentation sessions and support fellow student presenters.
• Engage with attendees, presenters, and members of the UMB community throughout the event.

Presenter Award Eligibility: Students selected to receive an award must attend the MSRD Awards Banquet to receive recognition and monetary prizes (Day 2, 4:00-5:00 PM).

Outstanding student research will be recognized through a competitive awards process.

Oral Presentation Awards

Oral presentations will be evaluated live during Medical Student Research Day. Awards will be determined based on judges' evaluations of the presentation, research content, and overall presentation quality.

Poster Awards

Poster presentations will be evaluated before Medical Student Research Day through review of submitted abstracts and poster files.

Important: Although poster award evaluations will occur before the event, poster presenters are still expected to attend MSRD and present their research during their assigned poster session.

Award Eligibility & Recognition

All student presenters are eligible to be considered for MSRD awards.

Award recipients will be announced during the MSRD Awards Banquet (Day 2, 4:00-5:00 PM).

To receive an award, recipients must be present at the Awards Banquet.

The number and type of awards presented each year may vary based on participation and judging outcomes.

In recognition of the hard work from both students and mentors in producing excellent research for our Annual Medical Student Research Day, we invite presenters to honor their faculty mentors.

This award is an opportunity to recognize a mentor who has significantly supported and impacted the presenter's research journey, training, and professional development.

To nominate a mentor for the “Mentor Recognition Award,” please submit a brief essay (250-300 words) on how they impacted your views on or productivity in research.

• Deadline: Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.  

These essays are meant to be brief and are intended to capture and express what you think and how you feel about a mentor who has greatly impacted you – a fusion of head and heart. With your permission, impactful quotes may be read and attributed to you during the awards banquet in celebration of MSRD.
