The Division of Nephrology at the University of Maryland participates in ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and the Medical Specialties Match Program administered by the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

Instructions for completing and submitting the ERAS application can be found on the ERAS website. The following documents are particularly important in addition to other required documents:

  • Submit three letters of recommendation, including letters from your residency training director, research mentor (if applicable), and current employer (if you have completed residency training).
  • Submit a concise personal statement of your career goals in Nephrology, previous research background/training and possible research, and academic interests (if applicable). If you are strongly motivated to pursue a research career in nephrology, please include it in your personal statement and describe your long-term academic goals.

Applicants may submit their fellowship applications via ERAS starting July 1. We strongly encourage applicants to complete their applications (including letters of recommendation) by early August.

Our fellows have diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and we encourage applicants from all different walks of life to apply.

We will sponsor J-1 visas for qualified candidates. However, our program currently does not sponsor applicants with H-1B visas.

Non-ACGME trained applicants (Exceptional Candidate Criteria and deadlines)

Candidates who have completed an Internal Medicine Training Program accredited by either ACGME-International (ACGME-i) or the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) are welcome to apply for a position at our institution.

For all other candidates who wish to be considered under the Exceptional Candidate Pathway they must demonstrate the following qualifications:

  1. Graduated from a minimum of 3-year Internal Medicine Residency Program in their home country by the start of fellowship.
  2. Demonstrate exceptional qualifications compared to their peers (examples include awards for outstanding performance)
  3. Demonstrate continued involvement in either clinical or basic science research within the field of Internal Medicine/Nephrology or serve in leadership roles either during or after training. (examples include: publications, serving as chief resident, completing additional training in Nephrology or other subspecialties)

All candidates being considered under the Exceptional Candidate Pathway must complete their interviews by September 30th to allow for sufficient time to be reviewed by the GME Committee prior to rank order submission.
