Our current active research funding exceeds $165M, over half of which comes from NIH and other federal agencies and more than $45M from clinical trials. With nearly 150 funded investigators, the department has an extensive research base in basic, translational, and clinical sciences and an extensive number of training awards.

The Department also supports and conducts research internationally, with considerable infrastructure in such geographically diverse areas as South America and Africa.

UMSOM ranked ninth in the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) latest list of Research Expenditures per Faculty in public medical institutions. The average research expenditures among the 94 public medical schools in the nation averaged $158,632 per faculty, whereas our faculty had $304,430 in expenditures per faculty.
