Site Description:

Blantyre Malaria Project (BMP) is a center of excellence for infectious disease research, established as a multi-university partnership between the University of Malawi College of Medicine in Blantyre (now Kamuzu University of Health Sciences), Malawi, the University of Maryland in Baltimore, USA and Michigan State University in Michigan, USA.

BMP was created in 1986 as a research site located within the Malawi’s largest referral hospital and has since expanded to include two additional sites in Malawi as well as a molecular and genomics laboratory. BMP has been conducting clinical studies and trials in infectious disease for the last three decades, including drug efficacy trials, drug resistance studies, longitudinal studies, vaccine trials, and trials to evaluate standard of care policy.

The institution has consistently provided training opportunities to physician scientists and researchers, and studies conducted at BMP have originated over 120 peer-reviewed publications, with 18 papers published in 2021.

Site Description:

The Malaria Alert Centre (MAC) was established in 2001 with the purpose of providing training in knowledge, skills and advocacy for malaria prevention, management, and control, and in methods that can be applied to malaria research. As part of the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, the center has collaborated with national health programs and international partners to become a center of excellence in training and research, developing capacities and strategies relevant to national and global health policies. As a result, MAC is a recognized partner for Malawi Ministry of Health and has received funding from diverse organization such as Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), National Institute of Health (NIH) USAID, UNICEF, Malaria Medicine Venture (MMV) and collaborated with universities of international repute to train, generate data and support infectious disease control efforts in Malawi and the region.
