Preparing the Next Generation of Funded Researchers: Meet our Newest Scholars

CARTI is thrilled to welcome nine outstanding new scholars selected for our Basic Research Training Track, beginning this September. These emerging researchers join a growing community of scholars committed to advancing innovative, impactful research.
Since the program launched in 2022, more than 50 scholars have completed the training, with many going on to secure competitive research funding.

- Maryam Karimi, PhD – Institute of Human Virology, UMSOM
- Tao Ma, MD, PhD – Oncology and Diagnostic Science, UMSOD
- Hayelom Mekonen, PhD – Neural and Pain Sciences, UMSOD
- Leonardo Parra-Rivas, PhD – Neurology/UM-MIND, UMSOM
- Long Wu, PhD – Surgery, UMSOM
Designed to build a strong foundation for research success, CARTI’s training tracks provide hands-on instruction in research design, scientific communication, and grant writing. By the end of the program, scholars will have developed a draft grant proposal, refined through a mock study section and expert feedback, positioning them to submit competitive applications to funding agencies.
We look forward to supporting this talented cohort as they take the next step in their research journeys and contribute to the future of biomedical discovery.

We are now accepting applications for the Spring 2027 Clinical/Translational Research Training Track. Applications for the Spring cohort are due Monday, October 5, 2026 by 5:00pm EST.
