Supporting Research Leaders

CARTI's Managing Your Research Program seminar series provides how-tos and best practices for anyone new to leading a research team or interested in honing leadership skills. These are the "soft skills" necessary for professional success that are rarely formally incorporated into any curriculum — time management, conflict resolution, creative thinking, staffing, giving/receiving feedback, and many others.

We invite UMSOM faculty members who have demonstrated success in specific areas to share their insights on how to develop and master these skills. We rotate through topics, so every topic is offered every year. Topics in the past have included:

  • Developing Leadership Skills as a Research Investigator
  • Establishing Collaborations and Creating Your Network
  • Financing Your Research
  • Giving Effective Feedback
  • Increasing Your Visibility Using Social Media
  • Leading a Diverse and Inclusive Lab
  • Managing Up: Communicating With Your Boss
  • Negotiation Skills
  • Project Management
  • Staffing Your Lab
  • Succeeding in Research During a Pandemic
  • Time Management
