CARTI & Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences to co-host Distinguished Researcher Lecture on June 8

May 05, 2026

The Center for Advanced Research Training and Innovation (CARTI), in collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, will host a Distinguished Researcher Lecture Series on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Taylor Lecture Hall in Baltimore from 8:00 -9:00 a.m.

The lecture, titled Seeing Small and Aiming Big,” will feature David Huang, MD, PhD, the 2023 Lasker Award winner and co‑inventor of optical coherence tomography (OCT), a technology that has transformed the diagnosis and management of eye diseases and has been adopted across multiple medical fields.

Dr. Huang developed OCT while he was a graduate student at Harvard/MIT, where the technology was conceived and advanced into clinical use. Since its invention, OCT has had a major impact not only in ophthalmology but also in other areas of medicine, including cardiology, neurology, and gastroenterology. During the lecture, Dr. Huang will share the story behind the conception and invention of OCT, its rapid transition to clinical application, and the importance of bridging engineering and clinical medicine.

Dr. Huang is Director of Research at the Casey Eye Institute and Professor of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University. His contributions to medical innovation have been widely recognized. He was co‑awarded the 2023 Lasker‑DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award and was named a laureate of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2022.

The CARTI Distinguished Researcher Lecture Series highlights leaders whose work has significantly advanced biomedical research and clinical practice. The June 8th lecture offers the UM School of Medicine and the UMB Campus an opportunity to hear directly from a pioneer whose work has reshaped modern medical imaging.

The lecture will begin promptly at 8 a.m. A continental breakfast will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. Register to attend this special event!
