Remembering Dr. Richard B. Horenstein

Richard B. Horenstein, MD, was a beloved physician, researcher, educator, and colleague whose impact on the University of Maryland extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. An associate professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, he was admired for his extraordinary intellect and remembered just as deeply for his kindness, humility, and generosity. His death in 2017 following a battle with kidney cancer cut short a remarkable career and left a profound loss among his family, friends, colleagues, students, and patients.

Dr. Horenstein’s education reflected the breadth of his interests and his enduring passion for learning. A Phi Beta Kappa undergraduate at Yale University, he also earned his law degree from Yale before pursuing his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan and came to the University of Maryland in July 2001 for his fellowship in endocrinology. Following his fellowship, he joined the Department of Medicine’s full-time faculty in 2004, building a career distinguished by compassionate patient care, collaborative research, and a deep commitment to education.

Those who knew Dr. Horenstein described him as a true Renaissance man. A thoughtful reader and deep thinker, he possessed an exceptional depth and breadth of knowledge and an intellectual curiosity that reached into every aspect of his life. Conversations with him were memorable for both the range of his understanding and the humble, unassuming way he shared it. Colleagues and patients remembered him as one of the kindest people they had ever met. His enthusiasm, positivity, and love of life enriched the lives of those around him.

As a clinician, Dr. Horenstein earned the confidence of his patients through keen clinical judgment and genuine concern for their well-being. He approached every patient with the same compassion, dignity, and respect, making each person feel valued. As an educator, he generously shared his knowledge with medical students, residents, and fellows, modeling the curiosity, thoughtfulness, and humanity that he brought to the practice of medicine.

As a physician-scientist, Dr. Horenstein was a cornerstone of numerous clinical and translational research projects at the University of Maryland. He was known for going above and beyond to support his colleagues and strengthen the quality of their shared work. A gracious and unselfish collaborator, he placed the interests of patients and the public ahead of personal recognition. His contributions reflected both his scientific insight and his belief in what colleagues could accomplish together.

The Richard B. Horenstein, MD, Memorial Lectureship was established through gifts from his family, colleagues, and friends to honor his memory and sustain his legacy. Held annually within the Department of Medicine’s Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, the lectureship recognizes leading physicians and researchers who have made significant contributions to translational medicine and exemplify the intellectual, professional, and personal qualities so valued in Dr. Horenstein. It serves as a lasting celebration of his life and an invitation to carry forward his commitment to lifelong learning, compassion, and collegiality.
