Institution and Year of Study

University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) undergraduate students currently in their second or third year of studies (Sophomore or Junior).

Study Field

Majoring in any science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field.

GPA

Minimum GPA of 3.2 (cumulative) with preference for strong science performance. GPA of 3.5 or greater preferred.

Program research and activities will be in association with or hosted by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Once selected, Scholars will identify, through the Mentor-Matching process, a research mentor from a list of available UM Scholars faculty mentors and work with the mentor to develop a research project.

Hypothesis-driven, remote-friendly, research project in basic, translational, and clinical research in biomedical or health topics, determined according to Scholars' research interests and professional goals.

Once selected, Scholars will identify, through the Mentor-Matching process, a research mentor and project from a list of available mentors and associated research projects.

Summer Research - 9 weeks of full time commitment in summer 2023

At least 40 hours per week in the summer after the end of spring semester and before the start of fall semester.

Students are expected to spend at least 85% of their committted time to conducting the approved research projecct and to participating in research education and development activities.  See Program Activities for information on Research Education and Development activities.


Standard 9-week research period for summer 2023 begins on May 30 and ends on July 28, 2023. If permitted by research mentor, student may take days off and make up missed days after the spring semester and prior to the fall semester, provided that attendance requirements for summer programming are satisfied.  Some students may need to begin one or two week earlier or end later to make up for missed time due to other commitments.
