Santiago, Chile

The CVD’s relationship with the government, universities and health services of Santiago, Chile began in 1978. The Chile program, Centro para Vacunas en Desarrollo - Chile (CVD - Chile), has its headquarters in the Roberto del Rio Children’s Hospital.

Historical collaboration in Santiago includes:

  • Field trials of Ty21a live oral typhoid vaccine involving 600,000 school children

  • Establishment of a modern molecular diagnostic microbiology laboratory in the Microbiology Program, University of Chile Oriente Campus

  • Quantification of the magnitude of the disease burden caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and Streptococcus pneumoniae

  • Clinical trials with Hib conjugate vaccines, including a large-scale effectiveness trial

  • Evaluations of combination infant vaccines

  • Studies with a live intranasal influenza vaccine
