About the Amish Research Program
The Amish Research Program has been a collaborative partnership between the Amish Research Clinic, the University of Maryland Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, and the Amish community. Since we began our research in 1993, we have enrolled over 10,000 Amish volunteers, many of whom have participated in multiple studies.
Our mission is to work hand‑in‑hand with the community to better understand the causes of a wide range of health conditions and contribute to research that may benefit individuals locally and populations worldwide.
A Community-Guided Research Partnership
Every study we conduct is chosen in consultation with the Amish community to ensure that our research topics are meaningful, appropriate, and mutually beneficial. None of our work would be possible without the generosity, trust, and continued support of our Amish volunteers.
This partnership is the foundation of our success and the driving force behind the program’s national and international impact.
How and Where Studies Take Place
We make participation simple and flexible:
- Many studies take place at our clinic in Lancaster, where free transportation is provided to and from all clinic visits.
- Other studies are conducted directly in participants’ homes, allowing volunteers to take part in research without the need to travel.
Our team is committed to providing a respectful, welcoming, and comfortable experience for all participants.

Benefits for Participants
Participation in our research studies provides valuable free health screenings, which have already helped thousands of volunteers learn more about their health. Depending on the study, screenings may include heart disease, anemia, thyroid problems, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, abdominal aneurysms, etc.
Many volunteers tell us that the opportunity to gain personalized health information—and to contribute to research that may help many others—is one of the most meaningful parts of participation.
Our Impact
The Amish Research Program has contributed to important discoveries and a deeper understanding of numerous diseases. These studies help clarify the origins, risk factors, and progression of complex health conditions and support advances that may improve health outcomes for many.
A Shared Commitment to Health and Discovery
We are deeply grateful to the Amish volunteers and community leaders whose support and participation make this research possible. Their commitment is essential in helping advance scientific knowledge and improve health for future generations.
