Honors & Awards - September

Samuel Barlow, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, in the laboratory of Professor Thomas Blanpied, PhD, in the Department of Physiology and UM-MIND, was named the winner of the 11th annual Regeneron Prize in Creative Innovation in the postdoctoral fellow category.

 

Rebecca Brotman, PhD, MPH, Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, Institute for Genome Sciences, was honored in July 2023 at the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research (ISSTDR) in Chicago with the ASTDA Achievement Award, which is presented to a person at mid-career to acknowledge an outstanding body of work in sexually transmitted diseases or to an individual for a single major achievement in the field.

Michy Kelly, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Neurobiology, was selected to participate in the Transforming Biomedical Research and Academic Faculty through Leadership Opportunities, Training, and Mentorship (TRANSFORM) Program. This is a year-long AAMC multi-faceted leadership and career development program.

 

Benjamin Lawner, DO, MS, Associate Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was recognized as the 2022 Maryland ACEP EMS Physician of the Year. The award is given to an EMS physician who demonstrates a high degree of commitment and dedication to the practice of prehospital medicine. Dr. Lawner currently serves as Medical Director for the Baltimore City Fire Department and the Maryland ExpressCare Critical Care Transport Team and is on the board of AMPA, the Air Medical Physician Association. 

Miguel Luján, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Neurobiology, won the best poster award at the Gordon Research Conference on Cannabinoid Function in the CNS held in Barcelona, Spain, in July 2023. The poster was titled, “Dopamine Neurons Mobilize 2-AG to Encode Predictive Warning Signals during Active Avoidance Learning.”

 

Muhammad Mohiuddin, MD, MBBS, DSc (Hon), Tenured Professor and Director, Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program, was honored in July 2023 with the DOGANA Lifetime Achievement Award 2023 by the Dow Graduates Association of North America (DOGANA) at the 2023 Annual Summer Meeting in Dallas, TX.

 

Nariman Nezami, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was the recipient of the 2023 Radiological Society of North America’s Honored Educator Award, recognizing his dedication to furthering the profession of radiology by delivering high-quality educational content for the RSNA. The RSNA Honored Educator Award recognizes RSNA members who have produced an array of RSNA educational resources in the past calendar year. 

Melanie Pina, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurobiology, contributed an image featured on the cover of the Journal of Neuroscience (Volume 43, Issue 28).

 

 

Marco Venniro, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurobiology, is among the few invited to attend The Nobel Foundation Symposium on The Social Brain, which will be held in Stockholm in November 2023. The meeting coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Nobel Prize to Tinbergen, von Frisch and Lorenz “for their discoveries concerning organization and elicitation of individual and social behavior patterns.”

Paul Yi, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was the recipient of the 2023 Radiological Society of North America’s Honored Educator Award, recognizing his dedication to furthering the profession of radiology by delivering high-quality educational content for the RSNA. Honors & Awards - October

Alagie Jassey, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, won a 2023 Ben Barres Spotlight Award from eLife. The awards shine a spotlight on pioneering researchers from groups that are underrepresented in biology and medicine or from countries with limited research funding.

 

Barbara Juarez, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurobiology, received the 2023 BBR Foundation NARSAD Young Investigator Award, a grant program providing support for the most promising young scientists conducting neurobiological and psychiatric research.

Grants & Contracts - September

Robert Bloch, PhD, Professor, Department of Physiology, renewed his grant titled “The Role of Dysferlin in Skeletal Muscle In Vitro and In Vivo” for a one-year period through June 30, 2024, by the Jain Foundation Scientific Advisory Board.

 

Florence Doo, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, received a one-year $140,000 AUR GE Radiology Research Academic Fellowship award to study “The Carbon Footprint of Radiology Artificial Intelligence: Assessing the Impact of Cloud Computing on Climate Change and Health Outcomes.”

 

Jason FalveyJason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, is one of the principal investigators on a five-year, $3.7 million R01 awarded by the National Institute on Aging. This grant entitled “The Paycheck Protection Program and its Effects on Staffing Patterns and the Outcomes of Residents Living with Dementia” will examine how federal policies supporting nursing homes during COVID-19 affected the health and wellness of older adults with dementia, and whether this effect was equitable across socioeconomically disadvantaged and rural areas.

Hyun Kevin Kim, MD, MHS, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was awarded $1,139,061 for a two-year grant from TriSalus Life Sciences for “A Phase 1b/2 Pressure Enabled Regional Immuno-Oncology Study of Hepatic Arterial Infusion of SD-101 with Systemic Checkpoint Blockade for Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma,” as well as $688,017 for a five-year grant from Replimune Group Inc to study “An Open-Label, Multicenter, Phase 1 Study of RP3 as a Single Agent and in Combination with PD-1 Blockade in Patients with Solid Tumors.”

Victoria Marchese, PT, PhD, the Jane Kroh Satterfield Endowed Professor of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, received funding from the American Physical Therapy Association's Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy. The grant titled "Sickle Cell Children’s Exercise Study (SuCCESs): Determining the Effects of a Targeted Exercise Training Program on Neuromuscular Performance, Locomotor Efficiency, and Exercise Tolerance in Children with Sickle Cell Disease" is a one-year $30,000 grant. Simon Ho, PT, DPT, CCS, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, will be a Co-Investigator.

Elizabeth ParkerElizabeth Parker, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has received funding in the amount of $49,875 from the Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center’s FY24 Pilot Grant Program for her study titled "A Feasibility Study to Improve Dietary Quality among Older Cancer Survivors with Impaired Mobility."

 

Kelly Westlake, PT, MSc, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) for the proposal titled "REACH Upper Extremity Trainer."

New faculty members in the Department of Emergency Medicine are:
Michael Baranowski, MD; Michele Callahan, MD; Jamie Kuck, MD; Sarah Lee, MD; Bobbie-Jo Lowie, MD; Rohit Menon, MD; Gabriella Miller, MD; and Rachel Wiltjer, DO.
Drs. Callahan, Lowie, Miller, and Wiltjer completed their residencies at UMMC, and Drs. Baranowski, Callahan, and Lowie completed their fellowships here. Drs. Menon and Miller are current clinical instructor fellows.

 


 

New Faculty - October

Sarah SmithSarah Smith, PT, DPT, joined the faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science on Monday, July 17, 2023, as an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Director for Clinical Education. Dr. Smith holds a Geriatrics Specialist Certification. Previously, she was with the University of Delaware's Physical Therapy Department, where she was an Assistant Professor of Practice and Staff Physical Therapist in the Neurologic and Older Adult Clinic.

Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, delivered an oral presentation on the topic of “Cardiac Infection and Inflammation Imaging” for the American College of Nuclear Medicine Hot Topics Webinar Series, which was co-sponsored by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, and held on August 22, 2023.

 

Jason FalveyJason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, participated in the Summit on the Advancement of Focused Equity Research in Trauma (SAFER-Trauma) on August 2 - 3, 2023. The conference aimed to help identify and characterize current gaps in trauma health disparities research, define funding mechanisms and pathways for collaboration, and outline a research agenda targeted at reducing and eliminating health disparities in trauma care.

Marcel Bahia Lanza, PhD, Research Associate, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, presented at the XXIX Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics, which was held in Fukuoka, Japan, from July 30 - August 3, 2023. His presentation was titled "EMG Normalization Approaches Show Differing Results in Older Adults During a Stepping Task."

 

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) held its annual Leadership Congress in Washington, DC, from July 21 - 25, 2023. The event brings together APTA leadership groups including the APTA Board of Directors; leaders of APTA chapters, sections, and academies; the APTA House of Delegates; and APTA standing committees. Faculty members from the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science hold leadership roles within APTA and participated in all of these important events.

  • Linda Horn, PT, DScPT, MHS, GCS, NCS, Assistant Professor and Cara Felter, PT, DPT, MPH, NCS, PCS, Assistant Professor, are APTA members of the House of Delegates.
  • Jason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, GCS, Assistant Professor, is a member of the APTA Public Policy and Advocacy Committee.

Department of Radiation Oncology members presented their research in a broad range of educational and other forums at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), July 23 - 27 in Houston, TX. With more than 50 presentations and additional service on panels and in other sessions, the department was well-represented across its many areas of research and practice. Several faculty members were asked to serve as moderators:
Shifeng Chen, PhD; Sina Mossahebi, PhD; Lei Ren, PhD; Elizabeth Vicente, PhD; and Junliang Xu, PhD.

Dr. Ren served as the 2023 Director of the Therapy Science Track, responsible for invited and proffered sessions that now form a major portion of the scientific component of AAPM meetings.

Quincy Tran, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, and Daniel Haase, MD, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director of the Critical Care Resuscitation Unit, are among the authors of “Arterial Monitoring in Hypertensive Emergencies: Significance for the Critical Care Resuscitation Unit,” which was published in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine on July 17, 2023.
