Honors & Awards

Jason AdlerJason Adler, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was honored in January by the national Emergency Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA) for sharing his expertise on new documentation guidelines through more than 20 presentations to emergency physicians and professional societies around the country in the months leading up to January 1, 2023, when the new guidelines went into effect.

Ivy Dick, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, recently received the 2023 Paul F. Cranefield Award from the Society of General Physiologists.

 

 

Jason FalveyJason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, GCS, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been awarded the 2023 American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Acute Care Lecture Award. This award is given to acknowledge and honor a member of APTA Acute Care for excellence and leadership in acute care physical therapy practice and for distinguished contributions to APTA Acute Care. Dr. Falvey will present at CSM 2024 in Boston, MA.

Daniel GingoldDan Gingold, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, has been named a Top 50 reviewer and Senior Reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine.

 

 

Xiaofeng Jia, BM. PhD, Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, received the 2023 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Star Research Achievement Award. SCCM is a large multidisciplinary community with 16,000 members in more than 100 countries.

 

Kelby Kaplan, PT, DPT, EdD, OCS, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been appointed to the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists (ABPTS) Specialty Council for Orthopedics. Specialty Council members develop the certification exam, determine eligibility requirements for certification/re-certification, and set the standards for the examination.

Terry Watnick, MD, the Joan B. and John H. Sadler, MD Professor of Nephrology and Medical Director of the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Program, will be honored in April 2023 with the 2023 Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease from the PKD Foundation and the International Society of Nephrology.

 


 

New Faculty

Rashmi Khosla BendaRashmi Benda, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was named on January 17, 2023, as the Medical Director for the Requard Radiation Oncology Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH; Easton, MD). She is a board-certified radiation oncologist who received her medical degree from the University of Miami, FL. She completed an internal medicine internship at Sinai Hospital and a radiation oncology residency at Wayne State University (both in Detroit, MI). Her areas of expertise include clinical radiation oncology, clinical trials, and establishing and growing multidisciplinary clinics in academic as well as community-based cancer centers. She most recently worked for Boca Radiation Oncology Associates (Boca Raton, FL), where she served as Chief of Breast Services.

 


 

Appointments

Rose Chasm, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, has been named the new Associate Chief Medical Officer at UMMC Midtown Campus.

 

 

Matthew Ferris, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, has been named as the new Medical Director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC). He will succeed Matthew Witek, MD, MS, in the position. He previously served in the department’s practice at the UM Upper Chesapeake Health/Kaufman Cancer Center site (Bel Air, MD).

 

E. Ana Lia GracianoAna Lia Graciano, MD, FAAP, FCCM, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Critical Care Medicine, was elected to the Board of Regents of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. Board of Regents are Society of Critical Care Medicine members who have been inducted into the American College of Critical Care Medicine in recognition of their contributions to Critical Care. The ACCM emphasizes the importance of management in the practice of critical care, and it is engaged in multiple activities including guideline development. The Board of Regents shapes the mission and vision of the College.

Xiaofeng Jia, BM, PhD, FCCM, Professor, Departments of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Anatomy & Neurobiology, has been appointed as the Associate Editor, Translational Neuroscience section, of Frontiers in Neuroscience.

 

Regina Macatangay, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, was nominated to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society as an alumna of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The induction ceremony was held on March 21, 2023.

 

David MarcozziDavid Marcozzi, MD, Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, is the new Associate Dean for UMMC Clinical Affairs. As Associate Dean, Dr. Marcozzi will collaborate with UMMC clinical and finance leaders on service delivery innovations to strengthen support for clinical and academic medicine. He will continue in his roles as chief clinical officer and senior vice president of UMMC.

 

Jason Molitoris, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, has been named the Associate Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). He succeeds Pranshu Mohindra, MD, MBBS, in the position.

 

Quincy Tran, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, has been selected as the new Research Committee Chair at UMMC Midtown Campus.

 

 


 

Awards, Grants, Funding

Seth Ament, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Institute for Genome Sciences, received a $343,477 award from Maryland Technology Development Corp for "Developing a Stem Cell Model of Epigenetic Dysregulation in Huntingdon’s Disease." Additionally, Dr. Ament received a $1,931,250 total award from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Mental Health for "Multi-Scale Consequences of Variants in the Schizophrenia Risk Gene SETD1A in a Population Isolate."

Lauren CoheeLauren Cohee, MD, Assistant Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, received a three-year, $533,000 grant from the Thrasher Research Fund, to support a clinical trial entitled, "Preventing Malaria in School Children to Protect the Whole Community."

 

Alan S. Cross, MD, Professor, Sharon Tennant, PhD, Associate Professor, Raphael Simon, PhD, Adjunct Associate Professor, Fr­ancis Michon, PhD, Adjunct Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, received approval for a U.S. patent on March 28, 2023, for “Immunogenic Compositions: Technologies for the prevention and/or treatment of nosocomial infections.”

Erika DaviesErika Davies, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was awarded a $384,145 Master Service Research Agreement with Xequel Bio for “Assessing the Efficacy of Granexin Gel Treatment Following Cutaneous Radiation Injury in the Yorkshire Pig” (2/2023–2/2028). The first Task Order under the agreement is for “Pre-Study: Begin Hiring Process for Key Personnel to Perform on Anticipated Studies.”

Cara FelterCara Felter, PT, DPT, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been awarded funding in the amount of $40,000 for the project titled "Understanding DPT Students' Readiness to Discuss Sexual Health," which was sponsored by the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research Board of Trustees.

 

Matthew Laurens, MD, MPH, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, fully executed a nine-month Clinical Trial Agreement between UMB and BioNTech to study “Safety and Immune Responses After Vaccination with an Investigational RNA-based Vaccine Against Malaria.” The total award/study costs $568,905.

 

Kathleen NeuzilKathleen M. Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, received two new Options for funding CIVICs (Collaborative Influenza Vaccine Innovation Centers).

David Serre, PhD, Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Institute for Genome Sciences, received a five-year, $3,432,629 grant from the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Disease (NIAID) for "Host and Parasite Factors Influencing P. vivax RBC Invasion and Asexual Development."

 

Hem ShuklaHem Shukla, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was awarded a $40,000 Institutional Research Grant from the American Cancer Society for “Human Pancreatic Cancer Derived 3D Organoids as a Clinical Tool to Evaluate the Treatment Response and Resistance to Therapy.”

 

Cassie Stapf, Graduate Student, Program in Neuroscience, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, received a three-year $117,348 Predoctoral National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) for the project "Sex Differences in Endocannabinoid Regulation of Behavioral Flexibility." Joseph F. Cheer, PhD, Professor, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, is co-sponsor. 

Shannon Takala-Harrison, PhD, Associate Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, received a two-year, $424,875 R21 grant from the National Institutes of Health for “Impact of Infection Complexity on P. falciparum Sexual Commitment and Gametocytemia.”

 

Li-Qun Zhang, PhD, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been awarded a $165,000 grant from the Maryland Innovation Initiative for the project titled, "Non-invasive Detection of Injury-Site Oxygen Deficiency and Excessive Pressure of Compartment Syndrome."

Presentations, Events, Lectures & Workshops

Odessa Addison, DPT, PhD, Associate Professor, and Elizabeth Parker, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor, both from the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, presented at the Baltimore County Department of Aging's 2023 Living Longer, Living Well virtual educational summit. The event, held on January 19, 2023, was offered as part of the 45th anniversary celebration of the Baltimore County Department of Aging. Dr. Addison's presentation was titled "Nutrition for Healthy Aging" and Dr. Parker presented "Exercise and Physical Activity for Successful Aging."

Omer Awan, MD, MPH, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was invited to be a faculty judge for the 50th Annual New England Journal of Medicine’s Latino Medical Student Association - Northeast Research Symposium, which was held in Baltimore in January 2023.

  • James Campbell, MD, MS, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, hosted a discussion on vaccines and vaccine hesitancy for the American Society for Microbiology at the University of Tennessee in mid-February.
     

Lauren CoheeLauren Cohee, MD, Assistant Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, presented and moderated a session at the annual International Centers of Excellence in Malaria (ICEMR) Workshop in Bhubaneswar, India, in mid-February. The topic of the session was "Reservoirs of Infection and Transmission."
 

  • Lauren Cohee, MD, Assistant Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, presented a virtual talk to the SMC Alliance Research Sub-Group Monthly meeting entitled "Measuring the Impact of SMC on Cognition and Education" in late February.
     

Zachary Dezman, MD, MS, Clinical Associate Professor, Departments of Emergency Medicine and Epidemiology & Public Health, participated in panel discussions as part of “Understanding Fatal Overdoses to Inform Product Development and Public Health Interventions to Manage Overdose.” Held on March 8-9, 2023, this was a virtual program hosted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA to explore clinical and public health responses to fatal overdoses of Fentanyl and other street drugs.

Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, delivered the oral presentation at the 50th Annual International Congress of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology (CardioEgypt 2023), entitled “Myocarditis from Clinical to Imaging: Novel Nuclear Techniques for Cardiac Device Infection and Inflammation.” The meeting was both virtual and in person and held in Cairo, Egypt, from February 20-23, 2023.

  • Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, delivered the oral presentation at the Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) of Philadelphia’s 18th Annual Update in Nuclear Cardiology, entitled “Criteria for Cardiac PET Absolute Myocardial Blood Flow: Clinical Benefit and Appropriate Use,” which was held in Philadelphia, PA, on March 26, 2023. He also served as a co-moderator and panel discussant on the “Leadership Development Program: Professional Development” webinar, which addressed how to find and successfully apply for research funding, which was sponsored by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and held on March 16, 2023.
     

Roy FilmRoy Film PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, attended an event hosted by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Discussion topics included the progress made in expanding access to opioid use disorder treatment by removing the X-waiver to drastically expand the number of healthcare providers who can treat patients with opioid use disorder; and the next steps in addressing the overdose epidemic. Among the speakers at the event included Dr. Rahul Gupta, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP); Anne Milgram, Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration; and U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (NH).

Peter Gaskin, MBBS, Associate Professor; Regina Macatangay, MD, Assistant Professor; and Karen Webster, Clerkship Coordinator, all with the Department of Pediatrics, were selected to present a workshop at the 2023 Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics Annual Meeting on April 4, 2023, in Long Beach, CA. Their workshop was entitled “Failure to Launch: Avoiding Common Roadblocks in Your Process Improvement Project.”

Dean Mark GladwinMark Gladwin, MD, Dean, Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor, delivered the keynote address at the first Emergency Medicine Translational Research conference, which was presented jointly by the Eureka Institute for Translational Medicine and the National Foundation of Emergency Medicine (NFEM) in San Diego, CA, from February 1-3, 2023. Speakers from the Department of Emergency Medicine included Brian Browne, MD, Professor and Chair; Stephen Thom, MD, PhD, Professor and Director of Research; and Gentry Wilkerson, MD, Associate Professor. Attending the conference as invited scholars were Department of Emergency Medicine assistant professors Dan Gingold, MD, MPH; J. David Gatz, MD; and Alexis Salerno, MD; and Clinical Assistant Professor Zachary Dezman, MD, MS.

Mangla Gulati, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine; Mary Njoku, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology; Tina Cafeo, DNP, RN, UPMC Mercy; and Stephanie Bentley, Project Manager, UMMC, have been selected to present the abstract, “A Sustainable Program for Integrating PSQI into Daily Work – Launched During a Pandemic” at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 2023 Patient Safety Congress to be held May 22-24, 2023, at National Harbor, MD. The presentation represents the work of the interdisciplinary UMMC Pursuing Excellence in Patient Safety Workgroup — a component of the ACGME Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments Patient Safety Leaders Learning Collaborative Cohort 2.0, which is comprised of 10 accredited GME Sponsoring Institutions brought together to identify new processes to optimize the learning environment pertaining to patient safety.

Melike Harfouche, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, Program in Trauma, presented at the Southeastern Surgical Congress, held in Savannah, GA, in February 2023. The topic of her presentation was “Time to Splenic Angioembolization does not Impact Splenic Salvage Rates.”

 

Blaine KenaaBlaine Kenaa, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine, was selected and invited for an oral poster presentation at the 2023 ACGME Annual Educational Conference, which was held February 23-25, 2023, in Nashville, TN. The presentation, entitled “Empowering House Staff Champions to Address Barriers to Event Reporting,” was highlighted as outstanding and selected for an oral presentation by the judges based on the abstract submitted for the poster. Co-authors include  Mary Njoku, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology; Alissa Werzen, MD; Nikhil Prasad, MB ChB, PGY-4 General Surgery Resident; Nadia Cheevers, BSN, JD; Rachel Reynolds, MBA; Jason Custer, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics; Mangla Gulati, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine; and members of the UMMC Pursuing Excellence Patient Safety Workgroup, co-led by Drs. Regina Macatangay, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, and Nicol Tugarinov, MS2, UMSOM, were selected to present a workshop at the 2023 Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics Annual Meeting on April 5, 2023, in Long Beach, CA. Their workshop was entitled “SERVICE: Student Evaluation of Real-Time Virtual Immersive Clinical Experience.”

 

Daniel MorganDaniel J. Morgan, MD, MS, Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, gave a talk at the first Global Joint Summit of Human and Veterinary Medicines Regulatory Authorities to Preserve Antimicrobials at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 4, 2023. The summit was focused on phasing out over-the-counter antibiotics. More than 200 directors of human and animal regulatory agencies worldwide were in attendance. The goal of the meeting is to identify UN General Assembly goals on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 2024.

Alisa Pravdo, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, participated in the College and Career Fair Day at Robert W. Coleman Elementary on February 20, 2023. Emily Sing, PT, DPT, Class of '20, and Alexa Dunn, SPT '23, joined Dr. Pravdo for the presentation. They spoke to multiple fourth-grade classes about physical therapy with a focus on sports medicine, which was at the students’ request.

Roger Stone, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was an invited presenter at the 42nd Annual Virginia Department of Health Office of EMS Symposium held in Norfolk, VA, from Nov. 9-13, 2022, speaking on “Reverse Specialty Center: Range of Alternative EMS Destinations for Low Acuity Patients” and “Ooh ... No Medic Please Don’t Go: Check-listing the Safety of BLS Transports after ALS Dispatch.” The symposium is the flagship academic EMS conference for Virginia and surrounding states. He also presented original EMS research at the 2023 National Association of EMS Physicians scientific assembly in Tampa, FL, which was held January 26-28, 2023. With colleagues from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, where he is the medical director, Dr. Stone presented the poster “Variability in ALS to BLS Downgrade Frequency in a Tiered EMS System.”

The Department of Radiation Oncology held the 18th Annual Radiation Oncology Symposium: Best of 2022 course on January 12, 2023, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Leadership Hall. The CME-accredited course provided attendees with updates in standards of care and treatment modalities, including the latest developments in radiation treatment of genitourinary, head & neck, central nervous system, gynecologic, gastrointestinal, breast/pediatric, thoracic, and systemic cancers. The day’s lectures, featuring experts from the University of Maryland and guest speakers, were followed by a reception.  

The Department of Radiation Oncology held its annual Mock Orals Course on Friday, March 10, 2023. Offered virtually, the course was designed for physicians taking board examinations in radiation oncology in 2023. The two-day interactive program simulated a radiation oncology oral board examination through a series of virtual one-on-one timed interviews reviewing high-yield cases with individual feedback, followed by a didactic session with disease-site experts providing an overview with practical tips and a question-and-answer session. Instructors for the course included a combination of invited faculty from across the United States and top-ranked experts from the Department of Radiation Oncology.
