Honors & Awards
Matthew Laurens, MD, MPH, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was appointed to a two-year term in the Technical Advisory Group on Salmonella Vaccines (TAG-SV) by the World Health Organization. He also was appointed to a three-year term on the Malaria Subcommittee of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Scientific Program Committee.
Milagritos Tapia, MD, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was awarded the Dean’s Faculty Award for Diversity and Inclusion on February 24, 2024, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine 2024 Diversity Dinner and Celebration.
Briana Tate, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, in the lab of Marcela Pasetti, PhD, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, won a Spring 2024 UMB-sponsored Postdoc Professional Development Award.
Promotions
Cinthia Beskow Drachenberg, MD, Professor, Department of Pathology, and Director, Electron Microscopy Laboratory, has been promoted to Professor Emerita effective July 1, 2024. Dr. Drachenberg began her career at UMMC as a resident in 1987. She was appointed Assistant Professor at UMSOM in 1992, promoted to Associate Professor in 1996, and promoted to Professor with tenure in 2002.
E. Adrianne Hammershaimb, MD, and Andrea Buchwald, PhD, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, have been promoted to Assistant Professor.
New Faculty
Qinghao Chen, PhD, joined the Department of Radiation Oncology on February 5, 2024, as an Assistant Professor. He will be working as a physicist at the department’s Shore Health location in Easton, MD. Dr. Chen completed his PhD in nuclear science and technology at Tsinghua University and a residency in medical physics at Washington University in St. Louis. His clinical expertise is in a wide range of external-beam therapies, with research interests including developing novel CT imaging systems for image-guided radiotherapy to improve image quality and reduce radiation dose.

Wilbur Chen, MD, MS, FIDSA, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was referenced by Business Insider in a first-person account of the experiences of a two-time clinical trial participant entitled “I made $9,450 and erased my credit card debt by joining 2 clinical trials. I just had to agree to get the flu and dysentery,” on February 23, 2024. He also was quoted in Time Magazine in a piece, “Why Older Adults Need Another COVID-19 Shot,” on February 29, 2024.
Elizabeth Clayborne, MD, MA, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was recognized in Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s “State of the State” speech in February 2024 as the founder and CEO of NasaClip, which created a hands-free device to stop nosebleeds. Designed for use in the home and at childcare centers, schools, and athletic venues, NasaClip can help stop a nosebleed before it results in a trip to the emergency department.
Matthew Laurens, MD, MPH, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was interviewed and quoted on February 29, 2024, by The Dispatch online in, “COVID Vaccine Study Prompts Misleading Claims About Potential Side Effects,” and was interviewed on March 1, 2024, by WBFF Fox45 Baltimore News, in a piece entitled “CDC: Norovirus Cases Rise in Northeast.”

Ilia Baskakov, PhD, Professor, Department of Neurobiology, was awarded a competitive renewal of his NIH R01, “Role of Microglial Phagocytosis in Prion Disease.”
Gary Fiskum, PhD, M. Jane Matjasko Professor for Research in Anesthesiology and Vice-Chair, Research, was awarded a one-year, $167,000 grant from the U.S. Air Force for “The Effects of Long-Range Aeromedical Evacuation on Military Relevant Complex Injuries.” He also was awarded a one-year, $316,788 grant from the U.S. Air Force for “Genomics of Hypobaria Following Polytrauma.” Both grants were awarded from 2023 to 2024.
Miguel Lujan, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Joseph Cheer's laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology, was awarded a K99 from NIDA to study "Postpartum Neurobiological Sequelae of Prescription Opioid Use During Pregnancy."
Sharon Tennant, PhD, FIDSA, Professor; Raphael Simon, PhD, Adjunct Associate Professor; and Myron M. Anu Kewalramani, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology annual meeting held in Washington, D.C., on February 22, 2024. The title of her talk was "Swallowed Steroids are First Line Therapy for Fribrostenotic Eosinophilic Esophagitis."
Matthew Laurens, MD, MPH, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was an invited lecturer on “Climate Change, Health, and Society” at the University of Maryland, Baltimore's Health Impacts of Climate Change: Vector and Waterborne Infectious Diseases on February 26, 2024.
Kathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was an invited virtual speaker at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Vaccine Policy Issues Course, presenting “Typhoid Vaccine Policy” on February 7, 2024. She also was an invited speaker at the Institut Pasteur Vaccinology Course 2024, presenting virtually on “COVID-19 Vaccines” on February 27, 2024, and was an invited speaker at the Vanderbilt Infectious Diseases Grand Rounds, presenting “The Urgency of Vaccine Development for Enteric Pathogens: Lessons Learned from Salmonella typhi” in Nashville, TN, on February 29, 2024.
Kelly Westlake, PT, MSc, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, was an invited speaker at the Encompass Health 44th Annual Neurorehabilitation Conference held on January 20, 2024. The title of her talk was "Reactive Balance Control and Training in Parkinson's Disease."
Gentry Wilkerson, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was a panelist for “Buprenorphine Treatment after Opioid Overdose,” a discussion that focused on the opioid crisis in Maryland as well as best practices, presented by the Maryland chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians via Zoom on January 29, 2024.
The 2023 Anesthesiology Research Retreat was held on December 1, 2023, at the UMB Campus Center. The retreat encouraged collaboration and knowledge sharing among basic scientists and clinical researchers. More than 70 people attended the event, which featured 36 oral and poster presentations by students, fellows, and junior faculty.
Several members of the Department of Radiation Oncology presented research findings at the 2024 Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium, which was held February 29 - March 3, 2024, in Phoenix, AZ.
