UMSOM Names Dr. Karen Kotloff as the John A. Scholl, MD and Mary Louise Scholl, MD Professor in Pediatrics

On March 28, 2023, before a large audience of family members, UMSOM faculty and staff, and distinguished invited guests, Karen L. Kotloff, MD, an internationally renowned pediatric infectious disease physician who has made outstanding contributions to scientific research, was invested as the John A. Scholl, MD and Mary Louise Scholl, MD Professor in Pediatrics. Dr. Kotloff is a Distinguished Professor in UMSOM’s Department of Pediatrics and also serves as the Head of the Division of Infectious Disease and Tropical Pediatrics and Associate Director of Clinical Studies at the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD).

Longstanding UMSOM OB-GYN Chair and Physician-Scientist Dr. Christopher Harman to Retire After Successful 40-Year Career

Christopher Harman, MD, the Sylvan Frieman, MD Endowed Professor and Former Chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, has announced that he will retire from his academic position in UMSOM’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, effective July 1, 2023.

UMSOM Names Matthew B. Frieman, PhD, the Inaugural Alicia and Yaya Viral Pathogen Research Professor in Microbiology & Immunology

At Westminster Hall on January 31, 2023, in front of a throng of colleagues, family, and other well-wishers, Matthew Frieman, PhD, was invested as the inaugural Alicia and Yaya Viral Pathogen Research Professor in Microbiology & Immunology. This new endowed professorship was established through the generosity of Marco and Debbie Chacón, with matching funds from the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF). Dr. Frieman is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at UMSOM.

Public Health and Civil Rights Academic Leader Dr. Dayna Matthew to Deliver Graduation Address to the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s 214th Graduating MD Class

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today that Dayna B. Matthew, JD, PhD, Dean and Harold H. Greene Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School, will deliver the keynote address for this year’s graduating medical student class. The UMSOM MD graduation ceremony will take place at the Hippodrome Theatre on Thursday, May 18, 2023. Doors will open at 12:30 pm, with the procession beginning at 1:30 pm, followed by the ceremony.

Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology Changes Name to Reflect Research Focus on Neurobiology

UMSOM Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, along with Asaf Keller, PhD, the Donald E. Wilson, MD, MACP, Distinguished Professor and Chair announced today that the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology will officially change its name to the Department of Neurobiology. The change, which was approved by the Faculty Council and the Executive Committee, is consistent with many top medical schools dropping “anatomy” from the name and re-focusing the department name on the research conducted by its faculty, specifically in the growing field of Neurobiology.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Celebrates Largest National Residency Match in History

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) has reported that the national 2023 Main Residency Match was the largest in NRMP’s 70-year history, with an increase of 481 more registrants as compared to 2022. A total of 40,375 certified positions were offered. Of the 37,425 PGY-1 positions offered, which includes preliminary and transitional year positions, 34,822 positions were filled for a rate of 93%.
