UMSOM Names Dr. Graeme F. Woodworth as the Howard M. Eisenberg, MD Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery

The University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) annual Student Research Forum was held Wednesday, July 26 and Thursday, July 27, 2023 at the SMC Campus Center. Proudly sponsored by the Office of Student Research (OSR) in the Dean's Office, the two-day event provides an opportunity for undergraduate pipeline and medical students to present discoveries from their summer research projects to an audience of fellow peers, faculty mentors, staff, post-docs, research fellows, and other members of research teams. Several visitors from the American Cancer Society were also in attendance this year.

IN MEMORIAM: Irving Kessler, MD, PhD

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Community honors the memory one of its beloved faculty members, Irving I. Kessler, MD, PhD, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, who passed away on May 12, 2023. Dr. Kessler was an internationally recognized epidemiologist and was widely known as a visionary leader in public health and general preventative medicine. He is survived by his daughters, Abigail Kessler and Amalia Kessler; son-in-law Adam Talcott (Amalia's husband); and grandchildren, Stella Talcott and Ari Talcott.

27th Annual White Coat Ceremony Welcomes Class of 2027

On August 4, 2023, the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Class of 2027 received their white coats for the first time, while faculty, family and friends joined students in celebration of the White Coat Ceremony tradition.

Research increasingly reveals health risks of e-cigarette use, and more studies are needed about the long-term impact e-cigarettes may have on the heart and lungs, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association published today in the Association’s flagship journal Circulation.

IGS Founding Director Claire Fraser Elected to NAS; Receives Distinguished Award from New York Academy of Medicine

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has announced that Claire M. Fraser, PhD, the Dean E. Albert Reece Endowed Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), and the Founding Director of the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS), has been elected as a new member of the prestigious academy. Dr. Fraser is one of 120 U.S. and 23 international new members elected on May 2, 2023 to the NAS, bringing its total U.S. membership to 2,565 members.
