UM School of Medicine Investiture Ceremony Recognizes Dr. Wilbur Chen, Leading Vaccine Researcher, as the Frank M. Calia, MD Professor

On November 14, 2023, before a large audience of University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) faculty and staff, family members, friends and distinguished invited guests, Wilbur H. Chen, MD, MS, was invested as the Frank M. Calia, MD Professor. Internationally recognized as a leading infectious disease physician-scientist with expertise in vaccine research, Dr. Chen is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and serves as Chief of the Adult Clinical Studies section within the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) at UMSOM. He is also Director of the UMB Travel Medicine Practice.

UM School of Medicine Recognizes Student Research Excellence and Outstanding Faculty Mentors at 46th Annual Medical Student Research Day

A proud tradition for the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) community, the annual Medical Student Research Day (MSRD) showcases the research accomplishments of medical students who participate in research projects throughout the year. This year’s event, held November 28 and November 29 at the SMC Campus Center, was proudly sponsored by the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and the Office of Student Research (OSR) in the Dean’s Office. The largest event to date in the history of MSRD at UMSOM, this year’s event featured 114 student presenters (study years 2-4, MS2-MS4) and 125 presentations.

Ozhan Mehmet Turan, MD, PhD, Invested as the M. Carlyle Crenshaw, Jr., MD and Lillian Ruth Blackmon, MD Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine

In front of an in-person audience of friends and colleagues gathered in Westminster Hall, Ozhan Mehmet Turan, MD, a world-renowned obstetrician whose contributions to complex obstetric surgery represent the gold standard of patient care, was invested as the inaugural M. Carlyle Crenshaw, Jr., MD, and Lillian Ruth Blackmon, MD Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Turan is a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). In addition, Dr. Turan serves as an Executive Vice Chair for the Department, Division Chief for Maternal Fetal Medicine, Medical Director for the Center for Advanced Fetal Care, and Program Director for Fetal Therapy and Complex Obstetric Surgery.

UM School of Medicine’s Confocal Microscopy Facility Provides Zeiss LS7 Lightsheet Microscope to Researchers, Enhances 3D Visualization of Biological Specimens

The mission of the Confocal Microscopy Core at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR) is to provide researchers with a wide array of state-of-the-art microscopy equipment, including one of its latest technologies, the Zeiss LS7 Lightsheet microscope. Heavily invested in providing hardware and software to facilitate high-impact data collection and analysis, the School of Medicine acquired the LS7 Lightsheet microscope in 2022 after receiving $600,000 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and over $110,000 in funding from departments including Pharmacology, Neurobiology, Neurosurgery, and Physiology.
