Leadership Eligibility
Students must be in good standing, as defined by University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) policy, to be eligible for and to continue serving in any Student Council leadership position. Any student who is no longer in good standing is required to step down from their position immediately. A student, even while in Good Standing, may not be permitted to assume or continue in leadership if both the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Medical Education determine, based on the student's documented history of academic performance and/or professional behavior, that assuming such a role would not be in the best interest of either the student or the School of Medicine. UMSOM Policy | Good Standing
Students are encouraged to carefully consider the responsibilities and time commitments associated with leadership roles and to balance these with their academic priorities before accepting a position. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) Deans are available to provide guidance and support in determining whether a leadership role is appropriate for an individual student.
Certain elected positions that carry greater responsibility and/or time commitment may have additional eligibility criteria or selection requirements.
All elected or selected student leaders are required to formally acknowledge their roles and responsibilities prior to assuming their position and to reaffirm this commitment on an annual basis. In addition, newly elected leaders are required to complete leadership training offered by the Office of Student Affairs or through the University of Maryland, Baltimore Learning Institute. Alternative training programs may be considered with prior approval from OSA.
