Student Leadership

The student leadership at UMSOM consists of a Student Council as well as representation for each class through the Student Government Association.

Mission

Student Leadership at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is dedicated to fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning community that enhances the educational and personal development of all medical students. Grounded in the institution’s core values of humanism, professionalism, scholarship, leadership, and critical thinking, student leaders serve as advocates, liaisons, and role models who promote excellence, integrity, and mutual respect across the student body.

Purpose

The purpose of Student Leadership is to represent and amplify the voices of students while strengthening communication between students, faculty, and administration. Through roles within Student Government, Student Council, and student organizations, leaders work to:

  • Build class unity and cultivate a strong sense of community among students
  • Advocate for student needs in academic, curricular, and institutional decision-making
  • Enhance the student experience through programming, events, and wellness initiatives
  • Support continuous improvement of the medical education program
  • Promote engagement, inclusivity, and professional development across all classes

Student leaders also play a critical role in organizing activities, managing resources, supporting student organizations, and ensuring that co-curricular opportunities align with the school’s mission and values.
